The 1st Gymnasium of Acharnes is a public school of Secondary Education located in Acharnes , a city that is 12 km away from the center of Athens. Acharnes is a suburb town in Attica, Greece. With 107,943 inhabitants (2011 census), it is the most populous municipality in East Attica. It is part of the Athens metropolitan area.The inhabitants are of middle and low social and economical class. The pupils come from middle but mainly low socio economic background and there are several children of economic migrants, repatriated migrants and Roma. Also the families from which students come from are poor, single-parent and with health problems.
There are 270 students and 25 teachers. It is the oldest school in the city of Acharnes. Most of the pupils come from old families of local residents of Acharnes but there are many pupils whose families are Greek repatriates from Pontus and the Black Sea . Also, the school hosts pupils from economic migrants such as Indians , Albanians, Romanians , Syrians and a significant number of Roma students ( 80) . Despite the difficult environment , many pupils engage in sports such as wrestling, basketball , football , have hobbies such as traditional and modern dance and many are learning foreign languages such as English, French and German. There are many cultural and environmental programmes that are implemented in the school and which many students are involved in with a lot of enthusiasm and willingness, although participation is voluntary.
The 1st Gymnasium of Acharnes , , has a long tradition of commitment and implementation of cultural, environmental , and health education . Every year the school organizes environmental projects They participate in a networks , "our school garden" and "weather"
"Sustainable School . The school also participates in a network called “Sustainable School” which implements the relevant programmes. Under this programme the school was distinguished the previous school year with the honorary ranking of the 8th position nationally. It has often won the top positions in traditional dance school competitions. Several pupils of Pontic origin deal with the Greco-Roman wrestling and some are getting high honours.
